My experience with Creatine

Creatine monohydrate is a very interesting substance. I was introduced to this substance as an introductory athlete freshmen year of highschool. What hooked me onto this substance was the fact that it claimed one can train harder allowing their body to put on more muscle per workout then someone not using the substance. It turns out everyones body produces creatine on a daily basis storing it in their muscles. The word creatine is the greek word for meat (kreas). The primary source from creatine in the diet is meat. Vegetarians show a significantly reduced level of creatine.

What happens in the body with creatine is interesting. During exercise as your muscle fatigues and is exposed to repetitions the number of ATP molecules decreases rapidly. As time progresses (the muscle rests) ATP is replenished. With supplemented amounts of creatine in the body (about 5 grams a day after a loading dose) as one finishes a repetition, ATP rapidly and instantaneously rebuilds allowing the creatine user to finish 2 or 3 extra repetitions past their typical fatigue point. With the extra work load accomplished the muscles become exhausted to a greater level allowing them to grow and recover at a faster pace. The new user of creatine will find that their maximum presses and lifts will have increased. The body generally puts on about 10-15 pounds of water weight within a week (varies per individual). The extra creatine in the body signals the kidneys to excrete it. Flushing out and resupplementation of the creatine places a workload on the kidneys. It is essential to facilitate the process by making sure one consumes a healthy amount of water everyday.

Creatine is helpful in many sports, especially those that produce short explosive movements. For example, sprinting is a great sport that can utilize creatine to its upmost. Long distances running can benefit from creatine as well but myself and many athletes experience disabling cramps when running long distances. It appears that creatine usage causes cramping in the distance runner. Other beneficial sports are football, basketball and baseball to name a few.
