Register a domain before it's too late?

When you have a website, it is imperative to have a name for that website, or domain name. The domain name is the address that you type into the address bar on your computer browser to find the page you want. Now, having said that, I will explain the reasons for making it a priority to find the best names you can right now, given that the task is getting a little more difficult day by day to select great names.
As you may have seen elsewhere, websites have a 'www' at the start of the address, followed by the website domain name, followed by an extension like .com, .net, .info and so on. These are the common extensions, but without doubt, the main one for any serious business is the .com extension. However, as more and more names are being registered, it is becoming difficult to find names that are short, with the keyword relating to the site and that are also memorable with the .com extension.
The reason for all the fuss is that when a person does not know the actual website name they want, they may try a few guesses online with a .com extension. To explain this better, let us imagine you want to find a website about doing business but do not know the details of the name. Some people will use a search engine, and others may even just try to type in an address that they guess. For example, they may try www.business.com and see what happens. Please note I have no association with the website I have just mentioned, but am using it for an example. In fact, as it turns out, someone registered the preceding name and hung on to it, till a buyer paid them many thousands of dollars for the name. I will list reasons why this is happening and other benefits of good names as well.
In the first instance, imagine you are in an elevator and only have about thirty seconds to talk to the person near you. You could also imagine a scenario where you run a business and wish to tell a prospective client to look for your details on line. For a start, you do not have much time and you want to leave the person with a memorable name. Hence, if your website domain name was www.xyz5674.ghy.info (an example only) you may well find they will never remember it and probably will make mistakes even if they had to write it down. On the other hand, if the name is simple, and straight to the point, like business.com or maybe www.flyabcairlines.com (another made up example), you are more easily able to be remembered and the .com is the most respected business extension.
Another important point is that if someone does not know your website address, but knows what they are looking for, they will use a search engine. A search engine will typically rank or index your website on a number of factors, like the keywords in the name of the site, the number of searches for that keyword or name, the number of other sites on the internet that are linking to your site and so on. The main point I wish to make here is that if your site is about air travel, you want to have some sort of air travel related name or keyword in the title or address name. It makes no sense to have a site about travel and call it www.buildyourbody.com (only an example).
The idea is to have a short and memorable name that also contains the keywords related to your site, to make it easier for the search engines to find you. After all, some site genres may have competing sites ion the millions and you need to make sure that your site is found first. However, with more and more registrations daily, it is getting harder to find good names that are short, memorable and not already taken.
When you use a domain register to register a site name, it will not allow you to register a site that is already in existence, so it is a first come, first served basis that allows you to register domain names. Ypou may use a wide range of providers for this, including, but not limited to Namecheap.com or Dotster.com. A typical registration for a name with a .com extension is about ten dollars a year. Now, if you have a name that someone wants to buy from you, you can resell them your domain name for as much as they are prepared to pay, which can range from a few dollars to many thousands. Some people even make a living from buying good domain names, parking them and then on-selling to the highest bidder. These are the reasons to be creative and quick, as with each passing day, the good names that are short are going to other buyers.
Another point is that some people try using hyphens and dots to change a domain name if their first choice already exists, but this can be difficult for people to remember, leaving you open to the risk of your prospective clients ending up on a competitor's site. Hence, the reason for speed to find and register your dot com domain names as soon as possible.
